Lava Breaches Grindavík's Defences as Volcanic Fissure Erupts in Iceland

A volcanic fissure has emerged near Grindavík, Iceland, following a series of strong earthquakes. The fissure, nearly 1,200 metres long, has breached the town’s defences, and authorities have evacuated residents, including those at the nearby Blue Lagoon spa. Roads in and out of the area have been shut, and a second fissure has appeared inside Grindavík’s protective barriers. Volcanic gas from the eruption is expected to affect air quality in Reykjavík. The situation remains critical, with the hazard level raised to the highest risk category, and scientists are closely monitoring the event.
