Chief innovation officer, psychiatrist, and integrative medicine physician at Open Mind Health, Dr Markus Ploesser, shared his favourite supplements for this goal.

He suggested the likes of Coenzyme Q10, resveratrol, curcumin, Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN) or Nicotinamide Riboside (NR).

However, for those looking for easy-to-access, everyday supplements, Omega-3, vitamin D and magnesium topped the list.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil or Algal Oil)

The doctor said: "Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, are known for their anti-inflammatory effects and cardiovascular benefits.

"These fats help protect against age-related chronic diseases, including heart disease, and can also support brain health, which is crucial for longevity.

"Studies suggest omega-3s may aid in reducing cellular ageing markers, such as telomere shortening, which could potentially contribute to a longer lifespan."

Vitamin D

This is particularly important for Britons to supplement, as many will not get enough vitamin D naturally. Getting enough of this can help lower the risk of chronic disease, the expert explained.

Dr Ploesser said: "Vitamin D plays a critical role in bone health, immune function, and inflammation reduction. Low levels of vitamin D are associated with an increased risk for chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, which can impact longevity.

"Since vitamin D deficiency is common, particularly in older adults, supplementation can be helpful in maintaining optimal levels for overall health and longevity."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

How to live longer: Mega study unveils ultimate diet for healthy ageing - raising longevity odds 86%

'I'm 101 and everybody asks my secret to a long life - I credit it to an activity I do twice a week'

90-year-old names the main factor 'to pay attention to' for a long, healthy life

Magnesium

Magnesium is an important supplement which can improve health and longevity, according to the health pro. He explained: "Magnesium is essential for numerous biological processes, including energy production, DNA synthesis, and muscle and nerve function.

"It also supports heart health and helps regulate blood pressure, factors that are important for longevity.

"Many people are deficient in magnesium due to dietary factors, so supplementation can help address potential deficiencies and support overall health."

While these supplements have many benefits and could boost longevity, it is worth checking with a doctor before beginning any new supplementation.
